Properly maintain your range hood for cleaner air, quieter operation, and stronger suction in your kitchen. This guide covers washing mesh grease filters, replacing carbon filters, cleaning the housing and fan blades, safety warnings, and practical tips.
Turn off the appliance and, if possible, unplug it.
Prepare warm water, dish soap (degreaser), and a soft brush/sponge for the filters and housing.
Use gloves to protect against sharp edges, and avoid excessively hard scrubbing on aluminum mesh filters.
🧩 Filter Types and Periodic Maintenance
Range hoods commonly have two types of filters:
Mesh Grease Filter: Traps grease; cleaned by washing. Ideally cleaned every 2–4 weeks with regular use (more often with frequent frying). Monthly cleaning is recommended for commercial kitchens.
Carbon (Activated Carbon) Filter: For odor removal; cannot be washed, replaced periodically. For home use, an average replacement every 3–6 months is recommended; this period may shorten depending on usage intensity.
🧼 How to Clean Mesh Grease Filters
First, slide the filter latches and remove the filter.
Prepare a mixture of warm water + dish soap (and a small amount of baking soda if needed) in a large basin.
Soak the filter for 10–15 minutes, then gently brush it with a soft brush in one direction.
Rinse thoroughly with plenty of water and dry completely (no drips remaining) before reinstalling.
Tip: If washing in a dishwasher, use low heat and no rinse aid; avoid abrasive chemicals to prevent the aluminum surface from dulling.
🧴 When to Replace Carbon Filters
Carbon filters cannot be washed; they are replaced when odor performance decreases or, according to manufacturer recommendations, typically every 3–6 months. Check the filter code/motor type to select the compatible model.
✨ Range Hood Housing and Fan Blade Cleaning
Wipe the exterior surface with a microfiber cloth and degreaser; for stainless steel, move in the direction of the grain.
Remove the lamp cover and gently clean the glass, then dry.
Do not directly spray water onto the fan blades; a damp cloth and mild detergent are sufficient.

⚠️ Common Mistakes
Washing carbon filters: Carbon filters cannot be washed; they should be replaced when performance drops.
Excessively hot water/chemicals: Can dull aluminum mesh filters.
Wet installation: Filters should not be installed before being completely dry.
Delayed maintenance: Clogged filters reduce suction and increase noise.
