In this guide, we will explain step-by-step how to install a carbon filter in a range hood. We will also practically cover how to install a carbon filter in a sliding extractor hood and how to install a filter in a ductless extractor hood. (Since there might be model differences, I recommend checking your device's user manual as well.)
A carbon filter is a component that helps "capture" the odor and smoke generated during cooking before it is vented outside. In ductless (recirculation) use, the carbon filter is one of the most critical parts. If your range hood/extractor is not connected to a duct, keeping the correct carbon filter installed significantly impacts performance.
Even within the same brand, carbon filters can vary based on details such as diameter, locking type, and compatible model code. The most reliable method is:
The metal grease filter under the range hood usually has latches. Pull the latch and lower the filter to remove it.
In most models, the carbon filter sits around the motor housing. In some models, 2 round filters are installed on either side of the motor.
Align the filter with its housing and usually secure it in place with a twist-lock mechanism. A "click" sound or the stop point at the end of the rotation indicates it's locked.
Reinstall the grease filter. Turn on the appliance and check the suction and sound at different speeds.
Sliding extractor hoods (models with a pull-out slide panel) generally have a more compact design. Although the principle is the same, the access step may change:
The products below are sample options for different brand/model needs. Always check your filter's measurements and device model before proceeding.
Purpose: Helps trap odor and steam with activated carbon in ductless use.
When to choose? If 00353121 (and equivalent codes) appear in your device's code/compatibility list.
Purpose: Especially for certain Beko/Grundig types, supports odor reduction in ductless operation.
When to choose? If your old filter's code is 165730006 or if it matches the compatibility on the product page.
Purpose: Provides carbon filtration for ductless use in some Arçelik sliding/extractor models.
When to choose? If your model matches P 171 TS / 9209881100.
Purpose: Helps trap odors in range hoods/extractors with a 135 mm diameter round filter type.
When to choose? If your old filter's diameter is 135 mm and the compatible brand/model list matches your device.
Most carbon filters are not washable. (There are special washable types, but they are not common.) Check the product/device information to be sure.
It varies depending on the frequency of use. If odor trapping has decreased, if cooking odors linger longer in the kitchen, or if the filter surface is noticeably full, it may be time for a replacement.
In ductless use, performance will decrease as odors will return unfiltered. The appliance will work, but complaints of "the smell isn't going away" will increase.
